The Transformation Sculptor – Scott McArthur

Now, more than ever, TIME! There is a new economy developing, one based on our most fundamental resource – time – and it is called “The attention economy”. In the first place, Scott states that our lives have become increasingly busy as a consequence of global communications, marketing, the internet, and social media. Throughout our conversation, Mr. McArthur believes that we are increasingly surrounded by “weapons of mass distraction” and that this digital bombardment is seriously disrupting how we spend our time and our ability to focus on what’s important.

The Future of Work

A professional speaker and workplace of the future specialist, the embodiment of the so-called gig economy. Scott has been involved in transformation programs in over 200 organizations globally (including Virgin, Amazon, KPMG, MOD, and NHS), and had successful careers as a scientist and academic, HR Director, business consultant, non-executive director (British Olympic bobsleigh team, Orkney Science Festival, and Boroughmuir Rugby) and also a musical producer. Nowadays, he is an international speaker, conservation ambassador at Twycross Zoo, and creative director of The Whole Man Academy.

The biggest lesson that Scott has taken from this breadth of experience is that most problems are multidimensional. He begins by explaining that the issue is that people’s experience tends to be one dimensional. In other words, it’s hard to understand a system of which you are part, without understanding where your blind spots are. Scott believes that the person with the fewest blind spots has a better chance of success via better thinking and decision-making.

Have a clear GOAL

Scott’s goal from the speaker’s stage is to encourage cognitive diversity in how we conceive the workplaces of the future, which he believes will be the driving force behind the workplace of the future. One of Scott’s virtual mentors, the author, poet and philosopher David Foster Wallace, expresses his motivations beautifully:

“There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”

Scott helps people to see the water.”

The magic of your Storytelling!
Storytelling
is our DNA! Stories are how you gain credibility! How you gain your audience. Your story is unique, you cannot copy other stories.
Scott emphasizes that each author and trailblazer has his own story. You cannot tell a famous author ́s story, because that is not your story. You have to find your own! Tell your story to change minds. You can speed up your success. Have your own perspective. Your own STORY!

Which is the great tip Scott shared with us?

Scott recommends Will Storrs book on the “Science of Storytelling”. It is the best he has read on this topic. As for a piece of recommended reading in these times, I’d recommend Pema Chodron’s “When things fall apart”. BIG THANKS for these great suggestions, Scott!
